About Us

The SAS Archive is a non profit program under  Instruments of Peace, a 501 (c)(3) corporation, created in 2008. The SAS Archive Online Project is its web extension.

The purpose of The SAS Archive to document and preserve the entire 91 year history of Saint Anthony’s Seminary and make this information readily available online to the general public through The SAS Archive Online Project.

The SAS Archive was originally founded by SafeNet in 2004. That same year SafeNet's successful effort to secure a temporary physical space for the archive at Mission Santa Barbara was joined by the SAS Alumni Association, thanks to Alberic Smith, O.F.M., the Guardian of Mission Santa Barbara at that time and the Director of the SAS Alumni Association.

While a permanent physical space for The SAS Archive at Mission Santa Barbara is no longer an option due to space limitations and adminstrative decisions, archival items are currently being stored in the office of SafeNet on the grounds of Mission Santa Barbara. The board of directors of Instruments of Peace is currently researching options regarding the feasibility of finding an alternative site for these materials.

St. Anthony’s Seminary was established in 1896 by the Franciscan friars as a boarding school for young men exploring the Franciscan way of life and the Franciscan priesthood.  The school was started at  Mission Santa Barbara and was originally known as St. Anthony’s College.  It was moved to 2300 Garden Street in 1900 and was renamed St. Anthony’s Seraphic Seminary.  The community included the Franciscan friars, young men from around the world, lay faculty and the greater community of Santa Barbara.  Saint Anthony’s Seminary closed its doors in 1987 and was sold in 2005. Under new ownership the school reopened that same year as San Roque High School.

We are grateful to all who continue to make this site accessible and operational. If you would like to help, please consider contributing in some way to keep this archive online.
