Music Recordings

Music in its many forms was a huge part of St. Anthony's Seminary life. From the chapel to the rec rooms, students listened to music on the radio or phonograph, or sang and played musical instruments whenever they could find the time. Choir practice was held in the SAS Music Room during the evenings. There was a piano in each of the 10 private practice rooms on the second floor of the main building. It was not uncommon at certain times of the day to hear someone pounding the keys, strumming a guitar, or playing (or trying to play) the trombone.

From time to time we plan to make available single songs and, when possible, entire albums from the musical library stored in the main SAS Music Room. Here you can listen to and/or download music available in MP3 format converted directly from the original vinyl LPs, some of which go back as far as the 1930s.

Some of these recordings were official SAS music albums recorded at the seminary as part of the school's Christmas and/or Spring concert programs. The songs on these albums were always performed by students of St. Anthony's Seminary who were members of the seminary choir. Over the years, various music albums were made under the directorship of a number of different SAS music teachers and faculty members, most notably, Franciscan friars Owen DaSilva, Warren Rouse, and Forrest McDonald.

Other recordings we plan to make available here are songs from 78s, 33 1/3 LPs and 45s that, over the years, became part of the musical library collection housed within the SAS Music Room. These albums of popular recordings included classical, opera, jazz, folk, relgious, pop, rock, comedy and spoken word. There was a phonograph always readily available in the SAS Music Room, and many of the albums could be checked-out by students for playing on phonographs in class rec rooms.

All the songs posted here are guaranteed to have their original pops, crackles, and static preserved intact. To listen, click on the song's title. To download, right click and select "Save Target As."
