St. Anthony's Seminary offered boys a number of opportunities to become involved in extra-curricular activities, particularly in the arts and sciences. One of these was photography. Over the years the seminary produced its fair share of photographers, as well as visual artists, botanists, musicians, scienists, poets and writers.

There were two darkrooms on campus where boys could learn film developing and photo enlargement. Over the years, thousands of photos were taken by boys who were learning the art and craft of photography for their own pleasure, and/or by those who were on the staff of the Antonian, the school magazine and annual yearbook.

There are many photos of seminary life in our files, both from the actual seminary collection and personal collections donated to the archive. We try to post as many photos as we can here. Each photo is dated and can also be located in its corresponding folder by year. Also, there are other photos not included here that can also be found in various designated folders.

St. Anthony's Seminary Freshman Football Team, 1965: The Cobras

Class pride was an integral part of seminary life and each entering class was identified by its chosen mascot name. The Class of 1969 was known as The Cobras. Legend has it that the new freshmen chose this name after an incident in the freshman dorm in which someone's pet gopher snake found its way into the senior prefect's bed. It was a close call, but in the end the name "Cobras" won out over "Gophers"  by a vote of 21 to 17.  St. Anthony's Seminary Choristers, 1965-1966.

This photo of the seminary choir was taken during a rehearsal for the recording of the album, Sacred and Secular in Stereo. You can listen to and download some of the songs from that album in the "Music Recordings" section of this site. Notably missing from the photo are student members of the brass choir (trumpet, trombone, baritone horn) who were probably out behind the handball courts taking a cigarette break. To learn the identities of all these songbirds click on the photo.

Jack Klecan as a freshman, 1963-1964.

Jack is from the Phoenix, Arizona area. He was a member of the SAS class of 1967. Well liked by both his classmates and underclassmen, he was elected class president in his junior and senior year and selected to be one of the three team sport captains in his last year. Photo taken behind St. Anthony's Seminary overlooking the canyon.

Stan Caspary, O.F.M. with SAS Students, 1964

Stan Caspary, O.F.M., SAS class of 1954, with student Tom Blomstad (on left), and Pat Merrill (on right), both from the Cass of 1966. One of the seminary's beloved teachers and friends, Stan returned to St. Anthony's in 1964 as a newly ordained priest (age 28) to teach English and History. He also became the Athletic Director. It was not uncommon to see Stan in jeans and tennis shoes challenging students on the football field or handball court. Stan now lives in Sheffield, Iowa, where he operates Flash Award Ribbons. This photo was taken as a promotion for the Franciscan's office of vocations.
NOTE: Special Thanks to Jim O'Hara (Class of 1966) for identifying Pat Merrill in this photo.
