It's been said that if you want to know the history of St. Anthony's Seminary a good place to start is with The Antonian, the official student magazine published continuously from 1920 until 1987, when the seminary closed. While the complete history is more complex, it's certainly true that The Antonian provides us with a unique view into the past unlike any other. Produced on campus by Serra Press, the seminary's official printer, The Antonian offered students the opportunity to report on what the many aspects of campus life were like at a minor seminary--living, working and worshipping together.
Over the years students learned all aspects of publishing, often under the supervision of master printers like Brother Kevin Dunne, O.F.M. and William Sutton. Each issue was edited by the students themselves, usually juniors and seniors from each class chosen by the faculty. Students from all the classes worked on different aspects of The Antonian: from writing the articles and taking the photographs, to assisting in the layout, typesetting, printing and subscription sales.
As the seminary changed, so did the design of the magazine, varying in both size and appearance and depending on editorial tastes. Frequency was fairly constant. In the early years, particularly the thirties, forties and fifties, nine, and sometimes even ten, issues of The Antonian would be regularly published during the school year. This would include special Christmas, vocation, and commencement issues. In the mid-sixties the magazine appeared quarterly and then semi-annually. By the seventies and eighties The Antonian became an annual publication and adopted a regular yearbook format.
Many issues of The Antonian have been lost over the years, either misplaced or destroyed. But many more have been rescued. The SAS Archive Online has now undertaken the task of cataloguing all exisiting copies of The Antonian and preserving this valuable history by digitizing and uploading them to this site.
Certain issues of The Antonian can be accessed and viewed by year. If you know the year you are looking for you can click on that year in our menu to the left to determine if it contains the issue you want. Since we're only able to add issues as time and funds permit, there will be many years that are not represented yet. This can make it a challenge to determine exactly which years are active. In addition, there are issues we either haven't been able to locate yet, or ones that simply don't exist anymore.
In this new section, "The Antonian," you can obtain quick identification and easy access to issues that have already been digitized and placed in their corresponding year. Just click on the desired links below. The issues are organized and presented starting with the earliest years. We plan to add to this section regularly until a complete list of The Antonian is compiled.
Note: All Antonians will be categorized sequentically and will reference: 1) Issues we have copies of that have now been digitized and uploaded; 2) Issues we have copies of that have not yet been digitized and uploaded; 3) Issues we don't have copies of that are either missing and/or no longer available.
